Anasazi Cave Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) crop.

This is the oldest known bean cultivar. Somebody said "those are just Jacob's Cattle Beans" (another Native American introduction), but they don't know what they're talking about. Jacob's cattle is a bush bean while "Anasazi cave" is a pole bean. Just because seeds look similar doesn't mean their genetic makeup is the same! Meanwhile I did learn something about beans this year.
Whether due to the midseason smoke, or possibly increased shade from all the trees we've planted, the Anasazi cave beans were extremely late this year. When frost became imminent, knowing that frost on beans with pods still a bit green would be curtains, I picked the whole lot. But instead of shelling them right away, put them on screens to cure. Stirring daily, the pods went from green to amber, and the seeds inside sucked the remaining resources from the pods and became fat, dry, and quite acceptably mature. So the lesson was, harvest at last possible date and do not shell prematurely. Corn and beans. Perfect protein. Fully growable on any small holding. If space is at a premium, grow the beans up the corn. I know, I know, a burrito from the store is somehow attractive. But we need to get used to good, simple, unplasticized food grown on the land. That is the way of it.
